The Challenge of Delegating: My Ongoing Journey

Building a business + mindset for longevity

Hi friends!

One thing I’ve always struggled with is delegation. As someone who loves learning new things and having direct control over the output of my brand, it’s been a challenge to let go of certain tasks. I thrive on being hands-on, but over time, I’ve realized that holding onto everything can actually slow down growth. It’s taken a lot of trial and error to figure out what I’m comfortable outsourcing and where I still need to keep a tight grip. I’ve grown my team over the past decade, but even now, I’m always evaluating how I can improve in scaling and delegating more effectively. Here are a few key tips I’ve learned along the way:

1. Track Your Efforts: When you start to feel overwhelmed, take the time to track everything on your to-do list. Organize tasks based on what you’re comfortable handling yourself versus what could be delegated or outsourced. This process not only brings clarity but also prepares you for when it’s time to expand your team. You’ll have a clear understanding of the skills and qualities you need in a candidate to fill the gaps effectively.
2. Utilize Project Management Tools: Tools like Notion (my ride or die!!), can help streamline delegation by tracking progress and setting deadlines. These tools also keep communication organized, so everyone stays aligned on deliverables without constant check-ins.
3. Stay Grounded + Focused: Vanity awards, new offices, and bragging don’t guarantee success. Focus on your personal and professional growth, the impact you’re making, and financial profit. Think long-term. Many businesses, even those that seem successful on the surface, are overspending and won’t be around in five years. Real growth happens when you’re building something sustainable and valuable to others.
